Lipitor

Atorvastatin, marketed by Pfizer as a calcium salt under the trade name Lipitor, is a member of the drug class known as Statins, which are used primarily for lowering blood cholesterol and for prevention of events associated with cardiovascular disease.  Like all statins, atorvastatin works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme found in liver tissue that plays a key role in production of cholesterol in the body.  Statins are prescribed to prevent the production of LDL and reduce the user’s risk of developing heart disease.

Studies have linked Lipitor to causing type-2 diabetes in women.  Many Lipitor lawsuit claims have been filed, with many more Lipitor lawsuits expected to be filed soon.  If you or a loved one has suffered Type-2 diabetes while taking Lipitor or developed serious health complications while on the drug, ,then you may be able to file a Lipitor lawsuit.

A diagnosis of diabetes typically requires significant lifestyle changes, such as restrictions on the types of foods that can be eaten, regular blood glucose testing, and medication.  Adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to have a stroke or heart disease than adults without diabetes.  Adults with diabetes also have an increased risk of neuropathy, blindness, and kidney disease.

Research studies have linked Lipitor to other side effects as well (some life threatening) including: cognitive impairment such as forgetfulness, confusion and memory loss as well as medication interactions that can cause muscle damage.

A number of studies have linked Statins including Lipitor to an increased risk of diabetes.  An FDA warning was even required to be included on the Lipitor label as of February 28,2012.  It stated the Lipitor diabetes risk as well as other Lipitor side effects.

Another study published on May 23,2013 confirmed the Lipitor FDA diabetes warning and earlier research when it concluded that Statins, such as Lipitor, had a higher incidence of diabetes risk than Pravastatin.  Researchers looked at healthcare records of more than 1.5 million patients aged 66 or older without diabetes who started Statin treatment between August 1997 and March 2010.  Overall, a 10-22% increased risk of diabetes was found.

We believe that Pfizer failed to warn doctors and patients about the serious risks associated with Lipitor, putting countless individuals at risk of developing diabetes and other serious side effects.  Pfizer should be held accountable for their actions, and so we are filing Lipitor lawsuits on behalf of individuals who developed diabetes while taking Lipitor.

Lipitor may also cause renal failure. Renal failure is characterized by the sudden inability of the kidneys to remove waste and concentrate urine without losing electrolytes.  The disease can occur from an acute situation, chronic problems, or from Statin medications like Lipitor.

If you are currently taking Statins like Lipitor, discuss this information with your doctor.  Do not stop taking any medication until you have discussed the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.
